Call for Papers

The Carson McCullers Center at Columbus State University (Columbus, GA) invites submission of papers and panels on a wide range of topics related to McCullers' work and influence. The conference is especially open to multi-disciplinary perspectives and emerging works by scholars and graduate students. While the committee remains open to any topic related to McCullers, we especially encourage discussions of her influence, her plays, her novels, her short stories, gender implications of her work, film adaptations, issues of race class, and/or sexuality, regional perspectives, issues of disability. Panel proposals are also encouraged, especially on such topics as McCullers and the Visual Arts; McCullers and Music; McCullers and Patriotism; The Coming of Age in McCullers' Work; McCullers and Religion; McCullers and Confinement; McCullers and Illness; McCullers and Justice; Cafes, Kitchens, and Food in McCullers' Work; McCullers' International Reputation.

Please submit abstracts of 500-750 words to mccullerscenter@colstate.edu.

Deadline for submissions: October 1, 2010.

CONFERENCE SCHEDULE: The conference will begin with a reception on Thursday afternoon, February 17, followed by a session that evening; and the conference will end with the birthday celebration on Saturday evening, February 19.

CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS: Tours of McCullers sites, screenings of new films, scholarly presentations, panel discussions, musical performances and much more. Confirmed presenters include Dr. Carlos Dews, Dr. Jan Whitt, Dr. Will Brantley, Dr. Mylene Dressler, Suzanne Vega and New York filmmaker Lauren Rosen.  The Jake Leg Stompers will rock the house at the birthday celebration on Saturday night. Stay tuned for more details as they unfold.

LODGING: A block of rooms has been reserved at the Columbus Marriott, 800 Front Avenue, Columbus, GA  31901. 706 324-1800. Tell the desk that you are with the Carson McCullers Conference and receive a rate of $109.00 plus tax. The Marriott is within easy walking distance of the conference sites. [Note: There are two Marriotts in Columbus; the other one is a far distance from the conference site. You want the one on Front Avenue.] Other accommodations within easy walking distance of conference sites include the Rothschild-Pound House Inn, the Gates House Bed and Breakfast, and the Howard Johnson Express.

TRAVEL TO COLUMBUS: If you are flying, we suggest that you fly into Atlanta and take a shuttle bus to Columbus, as flights into and out of Columbus are "iffy" at best.  Groome Transportation runs regular shuttles for $63 per person, round trip Atlanta Airport to Columbus. Or, of course, if you are very independent, you might want to rent a car at the Atlanta Airport. Drive time from Atlanta Airport to Columbus is 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
